The effect of aqueous extract of human placenta in reducing side effects of radiation in patients of Cervical Carcinoma - A Study at radiotherapy review room, IRCH, AIIMS

The study on human placental extract's effect as placental solution dressing on skin of patients of cervical carcinoma was done at Department of Radiotherapy, Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS, New Delhi. The abstract of the same could be found at the Indian Medlars Centre - medIND - the One point resource of peer reviewed Indian biomedical literature.

ABSTRACT: An aqueous extract of human placenta has unique pharmacological effect as seen in various phase II clinical trials. Placenta is an immunologically privileged organ which is the site of some non specific and specific effects, as enhancement of wound healing, analgesic effect, notable anti inflammatory action, inhibition of complement system and lecithin induced lymphocytes mitosis(1). The preliminary results of various trials indicate extract can be used in treatment of leucoderma as it can convert dopa to dopachrome then melanin formation. It also contains amino acid and small peptides especially tyrosine and tryptophan. After gel permeation chromatography extract of human placenta is obtained by proteolysis and isolated into a fraction of elevated molecular weight so that in vitro it can inhibit immunohaemolysis(2). 25 cases of carcinoma cervix undergoing external radiation to pelvis were studied for effect of placental solution dressing on skin and perineal reactions induced by external beam radiation in our radiotherapy review room, IRCH, AIIMS, New Delhi.
